BIG EAST women’s basketball teams had a successful Thanksgiving week winning numerous holiday tournaments and improving its nonconference record to 66-25 for a .725 win percentage. Georgetown won the Paradise Jam Reef Division, while West Virginia captured the Paradise Jam Island Division. Rutgers won the Lady Rebel Round-Up and DePaul won the Maggie Dixon Classic.
No. 10/11 West Virginia (6-0) topped No. 19/17 Iowa State 64-53 behind seven first-half 3-pointers. Senior Liz Repella scored a team-best 15 points, including three 3-pointers to lead the offense. She also earned tournament MVP honors. Teammate Madina Ali had 13 points and a team-leading nine rebounds to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. The No. 12/12 Hoyas (5-1) rebounded from its first loss of the year to beat No. 4/4 Tennessee 69-58 in the Paradise Jam held in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sophomore Sugar Rodgers scored a game-high 28 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Rodgers shot 10-of-18 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Teammate Monica McNutt added 13 points and was named to the all-tournament team.
Rutgers (4-2) won its fourth in a row by beating Oregon State 65-52 in the title game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up. Junior guard April Sykes led all scorers with 18 points en route to being named the Tournament MVP. Sophomore center Monique Oliver added a career-high 16 points playing in her home state. Oliver also had a career-best six blocks and four steals.
No. 1/1 UConn (5-0) knocked off Lehigh 81-38 in day two of the World Vision Classic in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies held Lehigh to just 19 points in each half and got a game-high 29 points from senior Maya Moore. UConn takes on LSU on Sunday for the tournament title.
No. 18/16 Notre Dame (4-2) ran past Wake Forest 92-69 in the second day of the WBCA Classic in Notre Dame, Ind. Five players scored in double figures, including junior Natalie Novosel who had a career-high 23. The Irish had a school-record 37 made free throws in the contest going 37-of-43 from the line (86.0 percent). The Irish take on Butler on Sunday with the winner claiming the WBCA tournament.
DePaul (6-1) beat UC-Riverside 91-47 to win the Maggie Dixon Classic held at McGrath Arena in Chicago. Junior Keisha Hampton scored a game-high 23 points and earned tournament MVP honors. Teammates Taylor Pikes and Anna Martin also earned all-tournament honors.
Seton Hall (3-4) lost to Auburn in the Junkanoo Jam on Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. The Pirates shot just 31.4 percent from the field and did not have anyone score in double figures.
Providence (3-4) lost to Alabama 82-80 in triple-overtime in the consolation game of the Junkanoo Jam on Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. Senior forward Mi-Khida Hankins scored a team-high 19 points for PC.
USF (4-3) lost to Samford 64-47 in the Samford Thanksgiving Classic held in Birmingham, Ala. Junior Andrea Smith scored a team-high 16 points for the Bulls.
