PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Syracuse will make its first postseason appearance since the 2004 season when the Orange meet Kansas State in the first New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.
Syracuse accepted an invitation to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl Tuesday from New York Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner. The game will be played Dec. 30 at 3:20 p.m. at Yankee Stadium and will be televised on ESPN.
"We are thrilled to have the Syracuse Orange representing the BIG EAST Conference in the inaugural New Era Pinstripe Bowl," said Steinbrenner. "It is exciting for us to feature such a respected academic institution from the great state of New York in the first year of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. We expect the historic backdrop of Yankee Stadium and the many attractions of New York City to create a one-of-a-kind bowl event for the athletes participating and the legions of Syracuse fans that will have the opportunity to watch their team play in person."
Projected to finish seventh in the preseason BIG EAST media poll, Syracuse went 7-5 in the 2010 regular season and finished with a 4-3 mark in BIG EAST play.
"This is truly exciting for our football program, the athletics department and the university," said Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "We are proud to be part of the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in its inaugural year."
The game will mark a homecoming of sorts for Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone, a native of the Bronx who graduated from Herbert H. Lehman High School, which is less than 10 minutes from Yankee Stadium.
"When the announcement was made that bowl game was going to be played in Yankee Stadium for the first time, my thought was that if we were not going to play in a BCS game, then how great would it be to play in the first college bowl game in Yankee Stadium in my first head coaching job," said Marrone. "The opportunity to play in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in my hometown is part of the whole dream."
Syracuse will make its 23rd bowl appearance. The Orange have a 12-9-1 record in previous bowl games and are 3-2 in the postseason against Big 12 opponents.
