PROVIDENCE, R.I. – West Virginia sophomore Rachael Burnett and Connecticut sophomore Karim Zayed were named the BIG EAST Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week and BIG EAST Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week, respectively, after turning in impressive performances.
Burnett posted three individual wins in the 148-146 Mountaineer victory over Rutgers Nov. 13. She finished the 100-yard freestyle in 53.19 seconds and the 200-yard free in 1:15.77. Burnett recorded a first place finish in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:25.76.
Zayed collected three individual victories and four relay wins, setting three school records and one pool record, while leading UConn to a second-place finish at the Terrapin Cup, hosted by Maryland Nov. 18-20. The Terrapin Cup was a three-day meet with eight schools competing. Zayed took first in the 500-yard free, 200 free and the 100 free, finishing in 4:29.16, 1:36.28 and 44.56, respectively. His 200 free set a Maryland pool record and an all-time UConn record. In relay events, he helped the Huskies to second place in the 200 free and assisted in winning the 400 medley, the 200 medley, the 800 free and the 400 free. The 1:36.28 200 free relay was a record for the Huskies, while Zayed’s 800 free relay split and 400 free relay split were also new Husky records at 1:38.38 and 43.88, respectively.
