Alexander, Schimmel Earn Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

Week 3 Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse sophomore center Kayla Alexander was named BIG EAST women’s basketball Player of the Week, while Louisville freshman guard Shoni Schimmel was selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
 
Alexander averaged 20.0 ppg, 5.7 bpg and 2.3 spg in Syracuse’s 3-0 week. She netted a career-high 24 points against New Hampshire on Nov. 29, connecting on 9-of-12 from the floor. She set a new career-high with 27 points against Maryland- Eastern Shore on Dec. 1, making 9-of-9 from the field, adding seven rebounds and four blocks. She just missed a triple-double, combining for a career-best nine blocks with nine points, eight rebounds and three steals in 21 minutes against Delaware State on Dec. 4. 
 
Schimmel led the Cardinals in scoring last week, averaging 18.7 points per game.  She finished the week dishing out 6.7 assists while shooting 56.8 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from behind the arc. Schimmel scored a career-high 26 points to help the Cardinals upset No. 8/9 Kentucky, finishing 6-of-9 from behind the arc, dishing out six assists and collecting three steals. In the win over Mississippi Valley State, she had 15 points, netting six more treys. Schimmel finished with 15 points, five rebounds and seven assists in the win.
 
The BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll:
Keisha Hampton, DePaul, Jr., F (Philadelphia, Pa.)
Averaged 22.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg, shooting 56 percent from the field with a team-best five steals. Had a career-high 31 points vs. Illinois State.
 
Sugar Rodgers, Georgetown, So., G (Suffolk, Va.)
Averaged 21.0 ppg in a 2-0 week, scoring 22 points in a one-point win over Richmond and 20 points in the win at Wake Forest.
 
Skylar Diggins, Notre Dame, So., G (South Bend, Ind.)
Averaged 17.5 ppg, 5.5 apg and 2.5 spg as Notre Dame defeated Purdue and fell to No. 2/3 Baylor; had eight points in a 12-0 run that cut Baylor’s 22-point lead to six.
 
Kandice Green, Seton Hall, Jr., F (Baltimore, Md.)
Averaged 18.5 ppg in two wins, including a 31-point, 23-rebound performance in an overtime win against William & Mary.
 
Madina Ali, West Virginia, R-Sr., F (Williamsport, Pa.)
Averaged 16.5 ppg in two wins last week on 63.2 percent shooting; recorded her third double-double with a career-high 20 points 10 rebounds in 20 minutes.
