Cincinnati’s Stephanie Niemer Named to AVCA All-America Second Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Cincinnati senior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer was named to the AVCA All-America Second Team as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Eight other BIG EAST players earned honorable mention recognition. This is the 30th year the AVCA has distributed the awards, which will be handed out Dec. 17 at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year banquet in Kansas City, Mo.

Niemer, the 2010 BIG EAST Player of the Year, is the first BIG EAST player to be named to the AVCA All-America Second Team since 2005 when three players earned the distinction. An All-BIG EAST First Team selection, Niemer ranks fourth in the country in kills per set with 5.08 and third in points per set with 5.91. The Erlanger, Ky., native had her most notable performance of the year in a two-game stretch against then-No. 5 Illinois and Purdue, when she notched 60 kills over the stretch and was named AVCA National Player of the Week. Niemer was an honorable mention selection in 2009.

Two Bearcats earned honorable mention recognition - senior Annie Fesl and sophomore Jordanne Scott. Fesl ranked fifth in the country and second in the BIG EAST with 12.03 assists per set, while Scott ranked sixth in the league with a .333 hitting percentage.

Louisville, which won its third-straight BIG EAST Championship title, placed two players gain honorable mention selections. Sophomore Lola Arslanbekova, who was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team, earned honorable mention recognition for the second-straight season after ranking third in the conference in kills per set with 3.86. Junior middle blocker Gwen Rucker also earned a selection, finishing second in the league in blocks per set with 1.23.

Marquette junior Ashley Beyer and seniors Rabbecka Gonyo and Nikki Klingsporn were each honorable mention selections, marking the first time the Golden Eagles have had players gain All-America recognition since joining the BIG EAST.  Gonyo led the BIG EAST in hitting percentage at .429, which was second in the country. Beyer ranked second in the league in kills per set at 3.87, and Klingsporn averaged 12.10 assists per set, the fourth-most in the nation.

USF senior Allie Boaz was also recognized as an honorable mention selection, making it three-straight years that USF has had a player garner AVCA honors. Boaz ranked fourth in conference matches with 3.75 kills per set while hitting at a .317 clip.

The eight honorable mention selections is tied for the most in BIG EAST history. Last season, the conference also earned eight honorable mention selections.
