STREAKING HUSKIES – With a 93-62 victory against No. 22/20 Florida State on Tuesday, Connecticut surpassed the longest Division I win streak of 88 games, formerly held by the UCLA’s men’s basketball program (1971-74). UConn also extended its home win streak to 69 consecutive games, tying the mark held by its own program (2000-04) and Tennessee (1991-96).
FILLING THE SEATS – There have been eight sellout games this year involving BIG EAST teams, including two this week. Connecticut captured its 89th straight win in front of a crowd of 16,294, while Marquette defeated Illinois 73-56 before a packed house of 3,812. DePaul had three sellouts in the month of December, most recently drawing 3,500 for a 91-71 win against No. 3/2 Stanford on Dec. 16. The crowd for the Maggie Dixon Classic on Dec. 19, when Rutgers played Texas A&M and Connecticut tied the streak against Ohio State, was the second largest for a women’s basketball game at Madison Square Garden (15,232).
ON THE ROAD – BIG EAST women’s basketball takes a break from action until Dec. 28, when three teams will be traveling to compete in tournaments. No. 18/17 St. John’s will play Liberty in the Maryland Terrapin Classic in College Park, Md., Villanova will compete against Yale in the Fordham Holiday Classic in Bronx, N.Y. and Cincinnati will matchup against Texas at the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic in San Diego, Calif. On Dec. 29, Marquette will play Florida International in the FIU Sun & Fun Classic in Miami, Fla. and No. 17/15 Notre Dame will take on Gonzaga at the State Farm Holiday Classic in Seattle, Wash.
NCAA LEADERS – Connecticut is leading the nation in scoring defense (44.9 ppg), scoring margin (37.8) and assist-turnover ratio (1.55). Syracuse tops the charts in field goal percentage defense (29.0) and rebounding margin (19.9).
