No. 7/7 Villanova (14-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) handed No. 24/25 Cincinnati (15-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) its first loss of the season, beating the Bearcats 72-61 at The Pavilion. It was the 45th-straight home victory for the Wildcats, who were paced offensively by Corey Fisher’s 21 points. Villanova led by as many as 21 in the game, but Cincinnati did not go away quietly, trimming the deficit to seven on multiple occasions in the second half. Forward Rashad Bishop led UC with 14 points, while Yancy Gates and Sean Kilpatrick each added 11. Villanova put the game away with a quick 7-2 run that extended a seven-point lead to 12 with under eight minutes remaining. Maalik Wayns had 13 of his 15 points in the second half for the Wildcats while Fisher had 20 of his 21 points in the first half.
No. rv/23 Louisville (13-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) improved to 2-0 on the road this season with an 86-77 win over USF (6-11, 0-4 BIG EAST). Preston Knowles scored nine of his 12 points in the final 3:35 of the game as the Cardinals hit 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Bulls. UofL had five players notch double figures, including three players registering 12 points including Knowles, Stephan Van Treese and Terrence Jennings. Van Treese also had a career-high 14 rebounds to record his first career doubled-double. USF pushed Louisville until the end, as forward Augustus Gilchrist notched his second straight double-double with 25 points and 10 boards. Knowles iced the game with a big 3-pointer with 2:08 remaining that gave UofL an eight-point lead.
