PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference has named Notre Dame guard Ben Hansbrough and Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier the winners of the conference's weekly men's basketball honors for the week-ending Jan. 9.
Hansbrough was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after he averaged 23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals in a 2-0 week for Notre Dame. He scored 21 points with five rebounds, four assists and a steal in a 73-70 win against No. 8 Connecticut and had a career-high 26 points with four rebounds, three assists and four steals in a 76-61 win against St. John’s. Hansbrough, who has hit for double figures in 10 consecutive games, leads Notre Dame in scoring at 16.3 ppg.
Napier earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors after he averaged 16.5 points in a 1-1 week against a pair of nationally ranked opponents on the road for the Huskies. He scored a career-high 18 points in a 73-70 loss against No. 14 Notre Dame and added
15 points in an 82-81 overtime win at No. 12 Texas. Napier was 10-of-16 from the field (.625) and 6-of-9 from 3-point range (.667) in the two games and registered his sixth and seventh games in double figures.
