PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Louisville senior Viktor Maksimcuk and freshman Julia Fellerhoff earned the season’s first set of BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week honors following dominating performances.
Maksimcuk went 2-0 last week in the No. 2 singles spot for the Cardinals and also earned two wins in the No. 1 doubles spot, leading Louisville to its second consecutive National Indoor Championship. Fellerhoff also went 2-0 for the Cardinals last week, posting wins at both top positions in singles and doubles.
In singles action, Maksimcuk, who ranks 75th in the ITA NCAA Division I standings, defeated No. 48 Columbia’s Cyril Bucher 6-0, 6-3 in UofL’s 4-0 victory on Jan. 29. He also downed No. 18 Mississippi’s 107th ranked Tucker Vorster 6-3, 6-2 as the Cardinals won 4-1 on Jan. 30. In first doubles, the senior combined with Austen Childs, the two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year, to beat Columbia’s Nathaniel Gery and Kevin Kung 8-6 and upset Ole Miss’ second-ranked duo of Chris Thiemann and Marcel Thiemann.
Fellerhoff went 2-0 last week in singles action and 8-0 in the month of January. She is also undefeated in doubles play, 5-0 overall this season after going 2-0 last week. In Louisville’s 7-0 win against Murray State on Jan. 28, she claimed first singles with a score of 6-1, 6-2 and won 6-2, 6-2 in UofL’s second 7-0 victory on the same day. The freshman teamed with Mandy Brown to shutout Murray State’s No. 1 pair 8-0 and Southern Illinois 8-3. The Cardinal duo is ranked No. 33 in the nation in doubles.
