Guard Ben Hansbrough scored a game-high 24 points as No. 9/8 Notre Dame (18-4, 7-3) beat DePaul 83-58. It was the fourth-straight win for the Irish, who moved into second place in the conference with a 7-3 record. DePaul (6-15, 0-9) was led by guard Brandon Young’s 16 points while Cleveland Melvin contributed 10 rebounds. Notre Dame led 37-24 at halftime, closing the frame on a 15-4 run. Hansbrough, who was 5-of-8 from behind the arc, dropped two 3-pointers to start the second half as a 15-5 ND run led to a 52-29 lead. Four Irish players were in double figures, as Scott Martin had 15 points, Tim Abromaitis had 13 and Tyrone Nash had 10.
Saturday’s schedule includes five league games and one non-conference contest. West Virginia visits Villanova in a battle between a pair of teams with 6-3 records in BIG EAST play. The game will be televised on ESPN at noon Eastern.
St. John’s heads to UCLA for a 1 p.m. Eastern (10 a.m. local) tip on CBS. It is the final non-league contest for any team in the BIG EAST. The league has a 159-40 (.799) record against non-conference foes. That’s the best mark since 1988-89.
Two games will be televised on the BIG EAST Network, including Georgetown hosting Providence at noon Eastern and Syracuse traveling to USF at 2 p.m. Eastern. Three night games feature Cincinnati at Pittsburgh at 6 p.m. Eastern, Connecticut at Seton Hall at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU, and DePaul at Louisville at 8 p.m. Eastern.
