PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Louisville senior Alejandro Calligari and Notre Dame junior Kristy Frilling were named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week and BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week, respectively following dominating performances last week.
Calligari helped the No. 13 Cardinals to a 2-0 record last week, going 2-0 at the No. 3 singles spot and 2-0 in No. 3 doubles.
Frilling led the No. 13 Fighting Irish to a 1-1 mark last week against a pair of ranked opponents. She went 2-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles, all at the No. 1 position.
In singles action, Calligari defeated Murray State’s Luka Milicevic 6-0, 6-1 in UofL’s 7-0 victory on Feb. 3. He also downed Morehead State’s Nathan Martin 6-0, 6-2 as the Cardinals posted their second shutout of the Feb. 3 doubleheader. In No. 3 doubles, the senior combined with Amaury Derognat to beat Murray State’s Milicevic and Renaldo Domoney 8-3, while edging Morehead State’s Roger White and Hugo Almonte 8-5.
Frilling recorded her second and third consecutive wins over ranked singles opponents last week with her victories over 13th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker of No. 5 North Carolina and 83rd-ranked Martina Pavelec of No. 54 Wake Forest. She beat De Bruycker 6-3, 6-2 on Feb. 5 in Notre Dame’s 5-2 loss to UNC. The junior slipped past Pavelec 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) on Feb. 6 as the Irish downed Wake 6-1. Frilling is 9-2 against nationally-ranked singles opponents this season and 27-7 all-time for ND at No. 1 singles. She teamed with Shannon Mathews to edge the Demon Deacon pairing of No. 83 Pavelec and Kayla Duncan 9-8 (7-5). The Irish duo dropped an 8-3 decision to the Tar Heels’ No. 8 team of Shinann Featherstone and Lauren McHale.
