BIG EAST Announces Winners of American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sixteen student-athletes – one from each BIG EAST institution – have been awarded $2,000 scholarships as the winners of the 2010-11 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete Awards. The selections were made by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee.

The 16 selections represent some of the best and brightest in BIG EAST athletics. Twelve of the 16 winners have cumulative grade-point averages of at least 3.60. Three have earned BIG EAST Player of the Year honors during their careers, while seven have earned all-America status.

The list of winners includes Villanova’s Sheila Reid, the 2010 NCAA individual cross country champion, a member of two NCAA championship teams and a winner of six BIG EAST individual titles in cross country and track & field. Notre Dame soccer standout Lauren Fowlkes was the 2009 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a member of the 2010 Fighting Irish squad that won the NCAA title.

Cincinnati’s Stephanie Niemer, the 2010 BIG EAST Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year, and Louisville’s Sara-Maude Juneau, the 2010 BIG EAST Women’s Golfer of the Year, were also among the 16 winners. The group also includes: Georgetown’s Renee Tomlin, a five-time BIG EAST champion in track & field; Marquette’s Nikki Klingsporn, who earned honorable mention all-America status in volleyball; and West Virginia’s Marie-Louise Asselin, who was the NCAA runner-up in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter runs in 2010 and the 2008 BIG EAST cross country champion.

The American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference and American Eagle Outfitters during the 2010-11 academic year. Thirty-two student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 16 member institutions) will be named as the winners of the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
