In the only conference game on Monday night, Syracuse (21-6, 8-6) beat West Virginia 63-52 at the Carrier Dome. The win gave Orange head coach Jim Boeheim his 850th career victory, ranking him second in career wins among active coaches behind only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. SU has won 12 of the last 13 meetings against the Mountaineers. Guard Brandon Triche led the Orange with 20 points, registering his second straight 20-point game. Syracuse held West Virginia to one field goal over the final eight minutes, closing out the game on a 12-3 run to avoid a four-game home losing streak.
Syracuse outscored West Virginia 34-4 in the paint and 19-0 on fast breaks. The Mountaineers (16-9, 7-6) were led by Casey Mitchell, who scored 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Mitchell’s 23 points was his best output in the last seven games. The Mountaineers shot a better percentage from 3-point range (50 percent) than from inside the arc (19.4 percent) in the contest.
Two games dot the BIG EAST schedule on Tuesday night, beginning with Villanova at Seton Hall at 8 p.m. Eastern. The Wildcats have won the last eight meetings between the two schools.
St. John’s visits Marquette at 9 p.m. on ESPNU. The Golden Eagles are 7-0 against the Red Storm in BIG EAST competition. MU took a pair of two-point victories last season, 63-61 in overtime at Carnesecca Arena and 57-55 in the second round of The BIG EAST Championship. Marquette plays four of its next five games at home.
