USF junior Devin Patel earned the season’s first BIG EAST Men’s Golfer of the Week honor for his outstanding performance at The Match Play held at TPC Tampa Bay on Feb. 11-12. Patel went 4-0 in his four matches in helping USF to a second-place finish in the tournament. It was the highest finish for the Bulls at a tournament in more than four years. The squad notched wins over BIG EAST foe Cincinnati, along with Cleveland State and Morehead State.
Patel did not play more than 16 holes in any match, starting the weekend with a 3-and-2 win over Joe Gasser of Ball State. The squad would lose the first round match 3.5-1.5, but bounced-back with a 4.5-0.5 win over Cincinnati. Patel beat the Bearcats’ Spencer Mellon 6-and-4. He continued to coast to victories in the third round, winning 5-and-4 over Cleveland State’s Jonathon Riemer. The junior wrapped-up the weekend with a 4-and-3 win over Morehead State’s Alex Wright in a 4.5-0.5 victory for the Bulls.
The next BIG EAST Golfer of the Week release will be on March 9.
