PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame senior Daniel Stahl and Cincinnati sophomore Jasmine Lee were named BIG EAST Male Tennis Player of the Week and BIG EAST Female Tennis Player of the Week, respectively.
Stahl helped then-No. 25 Notre Dame upset then-No. 6 Illinois 5-2 March 8. In the March 15 ITA rankings list, the Irish climbed to No. 21, while Illinois slipped to No. 9. ND is 10-7 overall this season and 8-7 against ranked opponents, nine of which were ranked in the top 25. In No. 3 singles play, Stahl handily defeated Illinois’ 65th-ranked Abe Souza 6-4, 6-1. It was his second-straight win over a ranked opponent and the highest-rated opponent the senior has defeated since Florida State’s 55th-ranked Clint Bowles March 14, 2010. Stahl is 10-6 on the season.
Lee led Cincinnati to a 3-0 mark last week, beating three BIG EAST schools. The Bearcats defeated West Virginia and Pittsburgh on the road by a duplicate score of 6-1 March 11 and March 12. Cincinnati picked up its second shutout of the season March 12 in a neutral-site game against Providence, winning 7-0. In singles action, the sophomore won each match in three sets. She rallied from behind to beat West Virginia’s Emily Mathis 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 and defeated Pitt’s Jocelyn Lu 6-4, 1-6, 10-4, playing both matches in the No. 2 spot. Lee edged PC’s Marisela Auiles 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-7. At No. 3 doubles, she teamed with junior Safiyya Ismail to beat the Mountaineer pair of Ashley Pilsbury and Melis Tanik 8-5 and the Panther duo of Karma Parbhu and Minh Evans 8-3. They blanked the Friar team of Courtney Burek and Bianca Sciotti 8-0. Lee is 10-5 in singles play and 6-8 in doubles.
