PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut junior righthander Matt Barnes earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors while Louisville junior outfielder Stewart Ijames was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the week ending March 27 as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Ijames earns Player of the Week honors after batting .438 (7-for-16) with four home runs, 11 RBI, six extra-base hits and a 1.313 slugging percentage to lead the Cardinals to a 3-1 week. Ijames homered in each of Louisville’s four games, with his best outing coming in Friday’s 11-2 win over Rutgers. The junior finished 3-for-5 in the contest with a home run, two doubles and five RBI. He helped UofL take two of three from Rutgers in the team’s conference-opening series. He leads the Cardinals with six home runs and 24 RBI on the year.
Barnes earns his second Pitcher of the Week honor this season after he tossed a complete-game shutout against Pittsburgh in the series opener to help Connecticut to a 7-0 win. The junior allowed just four hits (3 singles, 1 double) while striking out six and not allowing a walk in his second complete game shutout of the season.
Only one of the six BIG EAST opening series ended in a sweep, as St. John’s took all three games from Cincinnati. In the opening weekend, home teams finished with a slim 10-8 edge. Eight of the 18 conference games played were decided by two runs or fewer, including two games decided in extra innings. Connecticut, Notre Dame and Louisville all registered team ERAs below 2.00 in the first weekend of conference play. UConn leads the league, allowing just three earned runs in three games (1.00 ERA).
