PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame and USF share this week’s BIG EAST softball weekly awards as ND senior Heather Johnson was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while USF freshman Sara Nevins earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors.
Johnson led the Irish to a 4-1 record last week, including a 3-0 mark in conference action. The third baseman was 12-for-17 (.706) at the plate with three doubles, three home runs, 14 RBI and 24 total bases for a 1.412 slugging percentage in five games. Already the program’s single-season RBI leader, Johnson earned the career record with a five-RBI effort in the opening game of the series with Providence April 2. She recorded eight RBI in the three-game series, bringing her career total to 176. The senior recorded a grand slam in a 7-5 win over Purdue March 31. For the week, Johnson had four multi-hit and multi-RBI outings and currently rides a 10-game hitting streak.
Nevins helped the Bulls sweep Syracuse last week as the rookie picked up two wins and a save. The lefty posted a one-hitter in Game 3 against the Orange April 3. The no-hitter was spoiled by a one-out double in the seventh inning. For the week, Nevins recorded a 0.98 ERA, allowing two earned runs and 10 hits, while fanning 24 batters over 14.1 innings pitched. She held the Orange, who entered the series batting .301 as a team and averaging almost six runs per game, to a .182 average and just three runs.
