PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame, which went 5-0 last week, swept the BIG EAST softball weekly honors as senior Heather Johnson was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second-straight week and freshman Laura Winter was tabbed BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. The Irish have earned four weekly awards this season.
Johnson led the Irish offensively last week, including a home run in both conference road wins against Syracuse. The third baseman was 10-for-19 (.526) at the plate with one double and eight RBI for a .895 slugging percentage in five games. For the week, Johnson had four multi-hit and two multi-RBI outings and currently rides a 15-game hitting streak. She posted three runs, one sacrifice, five put-outs and two assists.
Winter earned three wins and one save in four appearances in the circle last week for the Irish. The righty gave up 13 hits in 18.0 innings with 24 strikeouts, including 11 whiffs over 10.00 innings of work during ND’s doubleheader at Syracuse. She blanked the Orange in three innings of relief to earn her team-best third save in the second game April 10. On the week, Winter allowed three earned runs and three walks for a 1.17 ERA.
