Notre Dame’s Varsity Four Earns BIG EAST Boat of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Notre Dame rowing team’s varsity four won one race and finished second in two others at the Lake Natoma Invitational in Sacramento, Calif., to earn BIG EAST Boat of the Week honors.  
 
The crew of freshman coxswain Christina Dines, junior Ching-Ting Hwang, freshman Courtney Gaberino, freshman Teresa Rubinger and freshman Kiersten DeHaven defeated Stanford, whose varsity four boat is ranked No. 6 in the West Region, by more than four seconds and beat Sacramento State by more than 47 seconds, finishing in a time of 7:27.00. The crew, which was made up of four freshmen, also had a near upset to No. 2 (West Region) California, losing to the Golden Bears by 3.35 seconds, but beating out No. 4 (West Region) Oregon State. The Irish went on to finish second in the Group B finals defeating Tennessee (ranked No. 5 in the South Region), but falling to Wisconsin (ranked No. 3 in the Central Region). Notre Dame’s varsity four is ranked fourth in the Central Region.
 
The BIG EAST Rowing Championships will take place May 1 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
