PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four schools are represented in the season’s final BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field weekly awards, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Cincinnati junior Eric Finan was named BIG EAST Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, while Rutgers sophomore James Plummer earned BIG EAST Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. On the women’s side, Syracuse senior Katie Hursey was named BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week while Louisville senior Rachel Gehret earned BIG EAST Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
Finan was named BIG EAST Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 5,000-meter run at the Polytan Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The junior broke his own school record, winning the event in a time of 13:49.80, more than four seconds ahead of the rest of the field. The mark is first in the BIG EAST this season, seventh in the NCAA East Region, and 17th in the country.
Plummer earned BIG EAST Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after winning the discus at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. Plummer recorded a toss of 60.43 meters (198’3”), tops in the conference and the third-best throw in the nation this season.
Hursey was named BIG EAST Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after finishing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Larry Ellis Invitational. Hursey notched a BIG EAST and ECAC-qualifying time of 10:13.39. The mark stands first in the BIG EAST and seventh in the nation.
Gehret earned BIG EAST Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week after claiming first in both the long jump and high jump at the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational in Louisville, Ky. The senior had a season-best leap of 6.18 meters to win the long jump. The mark stands first in the BIG EAST and 37th in the nation. She also cleared 1.77 meters to win the high jump, falling .01 meters of her season best.
The BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held May 6-8 at Jumbo Elliott Track in Villanova, Pa.
