PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After claiming the 2011 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship title, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish added more hardware to their trophy case by earning all three major BIG EAST postseason awards, announced by the conference office on Thursday. Junior Max Scodro was named BIG EAST Player of the Year, freshman Niall Platt earned Freshman of the Year honors and head coach Jim Kubinski was named Coach of the Year. The awards were voted on by the 12 conference coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Scodro, the 2011 BIG EAST individual champion, earned BIG EAST Player of the Year honors and was selected to the All-BIG EAST team. Scodro finished in the top 10 in seven of his 10 tournaments this season and finished with a 73.11 scoring average, good for first in the conference. He became the first Irish player since 2005 to win the BIG EAST individual title, firing a 54-hole total of 212 (-1) to be the only player to finish under par for the Championship. He led the Irish to their seventh BIG EAST crown and their first since 2006.
Platt became the first Notre Dame player to be selected as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Platt was the highest freshman finisher at the BIG EAST Championship, shooting a three-round score of 218 (+5) to tie for sixth place. He finished the regular season with four top-five finishes in 10 tournaments played, placing as high as second at The Invitational at Kiawah. Platt was the only freshman selected to the All-BIG EAST team.
Kubinski led Notre Dame to the 2011 men’s BIG EAST title, his third at the helm of the Irish. It is the first time in the three-year history of the BIG EAST Golf awards that one school has swept the three major categories.
Also garnering recognition was Notre Dame junior Chris Walker, rounding out three Irish players on the All-BIG EAST team. Louisville, 2011 BIG EAST Championship runners-up, placed two players on the All-BIG EAST team in senior Karsten Clements and junior Justin Dorward. Seton Hall sophomore Brandon Park and Marquette senior Kelly Kretz each earned their second-straight All-BIG EAST selections.
