CLEARWATER, Fla. – After four days and 13 games of action at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., the BIG EAST Baseball Championship title game is set as No. 5 seed Seton Hall will battle No. 2 seed St. John’s at Noon ET on Sunday on ESPNU. Mike Gleason and Mike Rooney will have the call on the broadcast.
No. 5 seed Seton Hall (32-23, 14-13 BIG EAST) is advancing to the title game for the seventh time in program history and the first time since 2001 when the squad won the title. The Pirates have won two BIG EAST Championship titles and are 2-4 all time in the final. SHU defeated No. 1 seed Connecticut 12-2 in eight innings, beating the Huskies for the second time in three days on Saturday to advance to the championship game. Seton Hall is 3-0 in the 2011 BIG EAST Championship, with wins over West Virginia (10-4) and a pair over Connecticut (4-3 in 12 innings and 10-2). The Pirates are on a roll with seven-straight wins and 11 victories in its last 13 contests.
No. 2 seed St. John’s (35-19, 18-8 BIG EAST) is looking for its second-straight title and seventh overall after beating Louisville 5-1 in the second game of the semifinal doubleheader on Saturday. St. John’s takes a 3-1 record in the championship into the title game, with wins over Cincinnati (7-3), Pittsburgh (6-4) and Louisville (5-1). The Red Storm took two of three from the Pirates in the regular season. The Red Storm won the 2010 BIG EAST Championship title as the No. 4 seed with a 3-2 win over Connecticut.
The winner will earn the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Baseball Championship. The NCAA baseball selection show will air at 12:30 p.m. ET on Monday on ESPN.
