St. John’s Nets A Pair of Women’s Soccer Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
St. John’s captured two BIG EAST women’s soccer weekly awards for Week 3. Red Storm senior Megan Klement was tabbed the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman Chelsey Martino was cited as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Notre Dame senior Melissa Henderson earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Connecticut senior Jessica Dulski was the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.
 
Klement was tabbed BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week following a 2-1-0 outing by the Red Storm. She played all 270 minutes in three games, and helped STJ secure two shutout victories. The team’s one loss was a 2-1 defeat at then-No. 4/14 Virginia on Aug. 30. Klement also was named the Defensive MVP of the NYC Classic Tournament held in Queens, N.Y.
 
Martino was cited as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week for her play over three games in a 2-1-0 week. She scored her first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss at then-No. 4/14 Virginia on Aug. 30. Martino also helped the defensive effort in a pair of shutout wins over Albany and Columbia.
 
Henderson earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors after totaling 10 points in a 2-0-0 week. She had one goal and two assists in a 7-1 win over Tulsa on Sept. 2 and three goals in a 4-1 win over Indiana on Sept. 4. The senior also was named the Offensive MVP of the Notre Dame adidas Invitational. The hat trick against IU was the fourth of her career.
 
Dulski earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors after amassing 16 saves against two nationally ranked opponents for the Huskies. In a 2-1 win over then-No. 15/17 Wake Forest on Sept. 2, the senior made 11 saves. Dulski also had five saves in a 1-0 loss against then-No. RV/25 Virginia Tech on Sept. 4. Both games were held in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Totaled seven points, including three goals, in a 2-1-0 week.
 
Maegan Kelly, Marquette, So., F
Scored four goals and added two assists to total 10 points against North Dakota; is the seventh player in MU history with a hat trick.
 
Kristin Russell, St. John’s, Sr., GK
Tallied 16 saves in a 2-1-0 week; had 10 saves at then-No. 4/14 Virginia on Aug. 30; also posted two shutouts.
 
Katie Ryan, Villanova, Sr., F
Had five points, including two goals, in a 1-0-1 week; totaled three points, including the gamewinner, in a 3-2 double overtime victory against Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 2.
 
Mary Vercollone, Providence, Jr., M
 
Scored two goals and added an assist in a 5-0 win over Holy Cross on Aug. 31; helped the Friars go 1-1-1 last week.
