SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Ryan Nassib threw for a career-high 318 yards and three touchdowns, including the decisive one to walk-on Michael Acchione midway through the fourth quarter, and Syracuse held off game Rhode Island 21-14 on Saturday.
It was the first meeting between the teams and Rhode Island's season-opener, and the FCS Rams held tough right to the last snap. The Rams were coming off a rare bye week to begin the year and returned all 11 offensive starters, including senior quarterback Steve Probst, who gave the Orange (2-0) fits all day.
After Rhode Island's Anthony Baskerville made a diving 15-yard touchdown catch to tie the game at 14 with 10:36 to go in the third quarter, Nassib and the Orange regrouped and drove 80 yards in eight plays for the winning score.
Nassib hit Acchione with a 12-yard scoring pass at the right pylon for the senior's first career touchdown with 8:34 left.
