PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins was named the season’s first BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Connecticut forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis is tabbed with the first BIG EAST Freshman of the Week selection.
Diggins averaged 21.0 ppg in a 3-1 start for the Fighting Irish that earned them second place in the Preseason WNIT. Diggins, who had 24 assists and 13 steals in the first four games, started the season with 21 points and eight assists against Akron, shooting 50 percent from the floor. Against Indiana State, she had seven assists, no turnovers and six steals, shooting 67 percent for 14 points. In a win against Hartford, Diggins recorded 22 points, six assists and four steals and shot 64 percent from the floor. In a loss to No. 1/1 Baylor in the Preseason WNIT final, Diggins had 27 points and shot 89 percent from the free throw line (8-of-9). She was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team.
Mosqueda-Lewis scored 25 points in 25 minutes in the Huskies’ win over Pacific on Nov. 15. She shot 83 percent from the floor, connecting on 10-of-12. She was 5-of-6 from behind the arc and grabbed seven rebounds. In the first two games of the season, Mosqueda-Lewis averaged 7.0 rebounds per game and 16.0 points per game.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll:
Bjonee Reaves, Cincinnati, Sr., G (San Bernardino, Calif.)
Reaves averaged 16.0 ppg and 5.0 apg in a 3-0 start for Cincinnati. She scored one-third of Cincinnati’s offense with a career-high 25 points against Dayton, connecting on eight field goals. She again led the Bearcats in scoring with 18 points against Evansville, connecting on 7-of-8. In her last two games, she’s had 11 assists and two turnovers.
Anna Martin, DePaul, Jr., G (Nicholasville, Ky.)
Martin had an impressive start to the season, averaging 21.0 ppg, with her high of 29 coming in a win against Portland. She added 22 points in a win at Hawaii and shot 62 percent through the first five games of the season. She leads DePaul with 15 3-pointers and was named to both the Maggie Dixon and Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine All-Tournament teams.
Sarina Simmons, Marquette, Jr., F (Milwaukee, Wis.)
Simmons averaged 19.0 ppg and 11.3 rebounds per game in a 2-1 start for the Golden Eagles. She added eight blocks and eight steals.
Jasmine Crew, Seton Hall, Sr., G (Camden, N.J.)
Crew recorded three 20-point games in the first four games of the season as the Pirates went 3-1. She averaged 18.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg to go along with seven steals and 17 assists, while shooting .940 from the free throw line.
Kayla Alexander, Syracuse, Jr., C (Milton, Ontario)
Alexander averaged 18.7 ppg and 10.7 rpg in a 3-0 start for the Orange and shot 51 percent from the floor.
