SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.
– The Seton Hall Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its annual Peanut Butter & Jelly challenge food drive in the lobby of the Richie Regan Athletic Center on Thursday, Nov. 10.
The event, now in its third year, sees student-athletes from nearly every varsity program come together to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to benefit Eva’s Village, a non-profit social service organization in Paterson, N.J., that provides shelter, food and treatment programs for the homeless.
This year 120 student-athletes gathered in the Athletic Center to make more than 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Eva’s Kitchen, which serves 350 lunches 365 days a year to the homeless and working poor.
“All of the teams look forward to this event every year because it is a competition to see who can make the most sandwiches,” junior softball player and SAAC president Brittany Hammer (Manheim, Pa.) said. “I think it is a great cause and we really have a lot of fun doing it.”
The teams developed their own unique style when it came to making the sandwiches, but most relied on an assembly line method.
With each team taking up its own table on the pool lobby of the Richie Regan Center, the sandwich making took on a frenzied pace in what has become a unique competition.
Some established an assembly line while other teams took to having certain members handle individual components of the process, coating multiple pieces of bread with peanut butter or jelly with the sandwiches coming together in the middle.
No matter what method was devised or how messy things got, the end result provides a great way for SHU student-athletes to make a difference and provide a worthwhile service to the community.
The PB&J Challenge has become such a popular event that it is now held during both the fall and spring semesters. The fifth edition of the friendly competition will take place this spring.
