THE GAME
The New Era Pinstripe Bowl will be played for the second time in 2011. The game pairs teams from the BIG EAST and Big 12 conferences at Yankee Stadium. Last yearís game was the first bowl game, and the second college football game, to be played at the new Yankee Stadium. Rutgers has played 10 games at Yankee Stadium, including a 27-12 win against Army this season. The Scarlet Knights are 2-7-1 all-time at Yankee Stadium. Rutgers has played 48 games in 13 different Major League Baseball venues. This yearís New Era Pinstripe Bowl will be the first meeting between Rutgers and Iowa State. The teams share Connecticut as a common opponent this season, Iowa State was a 24-20 winner against the Huskies, while Rutgers dropped a 40-22 decision. Last yearís New Era Pinstripe Bowl saw Syracuse hold off Kansas State for a 36-34 win.

Rutgers, which was picked eighth in the BIG EAST preseason media poll, returned to postseason play for the sixth time in seven years. Rutgers has played in six bowl games, with five coming during the tenure of head coach Greg Schiano. Rutgers had made just one bowl appearance in its first 135 years of football. The Scarlet Knights have won their last four bowl games, most recently the 2009 St. Petersburg Bowl, when Rutgers defeated UCF 45-24. The Scarlet Knights lead the BIG EAST in total defense (316.6 ypg, 15th nationally) and scoring defense (16.8 ppg, ninth nationally). Rutgers was well-represented on the BIG EASTís postseason honors list with four All-BIG EAST First Team selections and four Second Team choices. Additionally, LB Khaseem Greene was chosen as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Cincinnati DT Derek Wolfe. Rutgers boasts one of the nationís top defenses, ranking in the top 13 in total defense (311.5 ypg), scoring defense (18.8 ppg) and pass defense (168.3 ypg) The Scarlet Knights lead the BIG EAST in all three categories. Greene leads the BIG EAST in tackles after registering 127 stops in the regular season. S Duron Harmon, who has a BIG EAST-leading five interceptions, joined Greene on the All-BIG EAST First Team. The key man on offense is WR Mohamed Sanu, who shattered the BIG EAST single-season record with 109 receptions this season. Sanu has 1,144 receiving yards and caught three touchdown passes this season and needs just three catches to tie Brian Leonard as Rutgersí career leader. Sanu has 204 career receptions. RB Jawan Jamison has scored seven rushing touchdowns and has rushed for 766 yards. QB Chas Dodd and QB Gary Nova have both seen regular action behind center.

Iowa State makes its 11th bowl appearance after going 6-6 during the regular season. The Cyclones won their first three games, but went 3-6 in their last nine. Iowa State has lost two straight heading into the postseason following its 37-31 overtime win against Oklahoma State, the Cowboysí only loss of the season. Iowa State is looking for its 500th win in program history. The Cyclones are 499-594-46 all-time. Iowa State is 3-7 all-time in bowl games. The Cyclones last reached the postseason in 2009, defeating Minnesota 14-13 in the Insight Bowl. Iowa State set a school attendance record this season by averaging 53,647 spectators. The Cyclonesí regular-season schedule included seven games against top-25 teams. Iowa State was 2-5 against top-25 opponents. LB A.J. Klein shared the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honor from the leagueís head coaches. LB Jake Knott was an All-Big 12 First Team choice of the leagueís media. OT Kelechi Osemele was named to Sports Illustratedís All-America First Team. QB Jared Barnett took over as the starter in the Cyclonesí eighth game of the season and has been behind center for the last five games. Barnett has thrown for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns and has averaged 54.4 rushing yards per game. RB James White has rushed for 701 yards and eight TDs, while WR Darius Reynolds is the top receiver with 41 catches for 655 yards and seven TDs. Knott has a team-high 107 tackles with two interceptions and three forced fumbles, while Klein has 101 stops with 7.5 tackles for loss. Head coach Paul Rhoads is no stranger to the BIG EAST, having served as defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh from 2000-07. Defensive coordinator Wally Burnham held a similar position at USF from 2002-08.
