There were two BIG EAST games on Wednesday night, with both winning teams scoring more than 60 points. St. John’s (11-6, 3-1 BIG EAST) continued its recent impressive play with a 70-58 victory at Syracuse (12-6, 1-3 BIG EAST). The Red Storm have won four in a row. No. 15/16 Louisville (14-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) knocked off USF (9-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) by the score of 63-57 at home.
The Red Storm had four players in double figures, led by junior Shenneika Smith’s 17 points. Classmate Eugeneia McPherson added 16, and senior Da’Shena Stevens had her best outing of the year with 13 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two blocks in 39 minutes. Stevens missed the first part of the year recovering from an injury, making her season debut on Dec. 17. She has started each of the last four contests, all St. John’s victories.
Syracuse was led offensively Kayla Alexander’s 22 points.
Louisville rallied from a 33-29 halftime deficit in its win over the Bulls. Shoni Schimmel scored a team-high 16 points, while Sherrone Vails added 14. The Cardinals were 20-of-27 (74-percent) from the free throw line, while USF was 4-of-10 (40-percent). Jasmine Wynne led the USF attack with 20 points.
The BIG EAST returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 with six games.
