PROVIDENCE, R.I. – DePaul, Pittsburgh and USF split the season’s first BIG EAST outdoor track and field weekly awards as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. USF claimed two awards as senior Jared Thomas was named Male BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week while senior Shaniel Chambers was honored as the Female BIG EAST Track Athlete of the week. DePaul senior Melissa Fraser was honored as Female BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week while Pittsburgh junior Tashaun Hill was selected at the Male BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week.
Thomas was named BIG EAST Male Field Athlete of the Week after his 50.50-meter discus throw at the Florida State University relays. He took first place in the event and has the best mark in the BIG EAST this season. The throw is also the eighth best mark in the nation this season.
In DePaul’s first outdoor competition of the season, Melissa Fraser picked up where she left off last year in the javelin throw. The senior earned first place at the Florida State University relays in the event with a career-best throw of 54.04 meters. Fraser was one of just two female student-athletes to surpass the 50-meter mark in the event. Fraser began the event with a foul but followed with four throws that increased in distance each time. Her mark is currently the best in the nation.
Hill earned BIG EAST Male Track Athlete of the Week after he placed second in the 110m hurdles at the Charlotte 49er Classic on March 15. The time of 14.07 is the best mark this season in the BIG EAST and ranks 13th nationally.
Chambers was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week after placing first in the 800m run at the Florida State University relays. Her time of 2:06.19 was a personal best by over two seconds. It also was good enough for a USF school record in the event.
The next BIG EAST track and field weekly awards will be released on April 3, 2012.
