DePaul, Louisville, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh split the season’s third BIG EAST outdoor track and field weekly awards as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. DePaul senior Tim Nedow was named Men’s BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week while Louisville senior Chinwe Okoro was honored as the Women’s BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week. Notre Dame junior Jeremy Rae was honored as Men’s BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week while Pittsburgh senior Cambrya Jones was selected at the Women’s BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week.
Nedow earned Men’s BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week after he earned a career-best mark in the discus throw when his fifth throw of the series measured out at 56.66meters, good for first place at the meet. Nedow also took first in the shot put with a throw of 17.78meters.
Okoro was named Women’s BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week after capturing her third victory of the season in the discus with a throw of 56.90meters. It is nearly 20 feet beyond her previous personal best and the mark ranks first in the conference and third nationally. It is the fifth best throw in Louisville history. She also took second in the shot put, with a heave of 15.94meters.
Rae earned Men’s BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week after he finished second in his heat and sixth overall (second among college runners) in the 1500-meter run at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 3:41.34. The time places him second in the East Region and fourth nationally in the event.
Jones was named Women’s BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week after she finished fourth in the 200-meter dash at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Her time of 23.10 ranks first in the BIG EAST and fifth nationally. The time is an Olympic “A” standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the event.
The next BIG EAST track and field weekly awards will be released on April 17, 2012.
