PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A pair of BIG EAST women's lacrosse teams will be in action on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. No. 7/6 Loyola (14-5), the league's tournament champion, travels to No. 3/3 Maryland for a Noon faceoff. No. 4/4 Syracuse (17-3), the league's regular-season champion, hosts No. 5/5 North Carolina at 1 p.m. A win by either team would advance the squad to the semifinals of the tournament and a spot in the Final Four.
Loyola is making its 15th NCAA appearance in school history. The Greyhounds are 13-14 all-time in the NCAA Championship and making their second straight trip. The Greyhounds have advanced to the Final Four seven times and played for the national championship in 1997 (losing to Maryland, 8-7). In the first round NCAA Championship, Loyola topped Penn 10-9 in overtime.
Syracuse earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship, its 10th appearance overall. The Orange won the BIG EAST regular-season title with an 8-0 league record and advanced to the title game of the BIG EAST Championship. Syracuse is 7-9 all-time in the NCAA Championship and making its fifth straight appearance. The Orange have advanced to the Final Four twice in the past five years (2008 and 2010). In 2008, Syracuse beat North Carolina (13-11 in the Carrier Dome) to advance to the Final Four. The Orange topped Dartmouth 15-5 in the First Round of the NCAAs.
In its 10 years of existence, the BIG EAST has seen six teams advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
