Eight BIG EAST men’s lacrosse players were honored on the USILA All-America Teams, released by the organization on May 24. In addition, six BIG EAST student-athletes were chosen to compete in the USILA/LAXWORLD 2012 North-South Classic, which was played on May 25 at Harvard Stadium.
Named to the USILA First Team were two Notre Dame teammates: defender Kevin Randall and goalie John Kemp. Syracuse defender Brian Megill was selected to the second team.
Randall was selected as the 2012 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalist. The Notre Dame captain was a force in the Irish defensive unit that ranked first nationally, allowing just 6.27 goals per game. The Irish also boasted the nation’s top man-down defense (.882). It was the first All-America honor for Randall.
Kemp earned a 13-3 record between the pipes this season and ranked first nationally in both goals-against average (6.22) and save percentage (.636). He was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in addition to earning First Team All-League honors. Kemp, a 2012 Tewaaraton Award nominee, received honorable mention All-America honors last season. Kemp earned the 2012 USILA Division I Outstanding Defender Award as well.
One of the 25 nominees for the Tewaaraton Award, Megill was a unanimous 2012 All-BIG EAST First Team selection. He led the Orange in ground balls (62) and set a school single-season record with 37 caused turnovers. Megill also contributed three points (one goal, two assists) on offense, and posted a .468 faceoff winning percentage.
There were five BIG EAST representatives that earned Honorable Mention nods, including attackmen Kevin Cunningham (Villanova) and Kieran McArdle (St. John’s), midfielders Will Mangan (Rutgers) and Jim Marlatt (Notre Dame) and defender Matt Miller (Notre Dame).
Each team had three BIG EAST student-athletes in the USILA/LAXWORLD 2012 North-South Classic.
On the North Team, the BIG EAST was represented by William Mangan from Rutgers and Tommy Palasek and Kevin Drew from Syracuse.
Representing the BIG EAST on the South Team were Harrison Freid and Harry Kutner from St. John’s, along with Villanova’s Michael Vigilante.
