PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Twenty-five BIG EAST baseball players heard their names called in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, including 11 players who were chosen in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
All but two of the 12 BIG EAST schools had at least one player selected by a Major League club, while seven BIG EAST schools had at least two players chosen. St. John’s, which won the 2012 BIG EAST Championship and captured a share of the regular-season title, had a league-high five players selected, including outfielder Jeremy Baltz, who went to the San Diego Padres in the second round. Baltz was the first BIG EAST player off the board.
BIG EAST Player of the Year Patrick Kivlehan of Rutgers, who had not played organized baseball since high school before walking on to the Scarlet Knight roster this season, was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round. Louisville’s Justin Amlung, the 2012 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the draft. .
