BIG EAST Men's Soccer Lands Four on MAC Hermann Award Watch List

The BIG EAST had four players named to the 2012 NSCAA Men’s MAC Hermann Award Watch List, announced on August 13. Connecticut is one of eight teams with at least two players on the 42-person list, as senior midfielder Carlos Alvarez and sophomore goalkeeper Andre Blake were named to the list. They were joined by Providence senior midfield Marc Cintron and Georgetown junior forward Steve Neumann.

The MAC Herman Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. The list will be narrowed down by National Soccer Coaches Association members from Division I programs to 15 semifinalists by November 29. Member coaches and fans will then vote for their top three choices and the finalists will be announced December 6. The winners will be announced at the awards banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, Jan. 11.

Alvarez, a member of the 2011 preseason watch list, was named an NSCAA Second Team All-American following his junior year after notching six goals and eight assists for 20 points. Alvarez was named Second Team All-BIG EAST in 2011 after being tabbed First Team All-BIG EAST in 2010 and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 2009. Connecticut's captain will begin his senior year ranked No. 7 all-time at UConn with 33 assists. Alvarez earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team for the second consecutive year as the Huskies were picked to finish first in the BIG EAST Blue Division.

Blake became the first freshman in BIG EAST men's soccer history to win a major conference award at the annual end-of-season banquet when he was tabbed as BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2011. He finished the season with a 19-3-3 record based on a 0.39 goals against average and .888 save percentage to go with 15 shutouts, all totals good for second in the NCAA. Blake set a Connecticut record with nine-straight shutouts, spanning 961:32. Most recently, the sophomore goalkeeper was tabbed the unanimous BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

Last season, Cintron earned All-BIG EAST Third Team honors and was named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team. Cintron finished third on the team in scoring with 11 points on three goals and a team-high five assists in 2011. Nine of his 11 points came in BIG EAST Conference matches.  Most recently, Cintron was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Conference Team on August 6.

Neumann was the 2011 Georgetown team MVP. He was named First Team All-Northeast Region from the NSCAA and First Team All-BIG EAST. The midfielder ranked first on the team in points scored with 29, tallied on 11 goals and seven assists. Neumann started in all 19 games for the Hoyas and had six game-winning goals to his credit. He was first in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals and second in points, points per game, and goals per game. He was third in the BIG EAST in goals and fourth in assists and assists per game.
