PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Shelbey Manthorpe of Seton Hall led the Pirates to a 2-0 opening weekend at the JMU Classic to earn the season’s first BIG EAST Volleyball Player of the Week award. Notre Dame’s Taylor Morey was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for her efforts against two top-five nationally ranked opponents.
Manthorpe dished out 30-plus assists in consecutive contests on Saturday, August 25. In her first match of the 2012 season, the Merion Station, Pa., native recorded a triple-double in a 3-1 win over Appalachian State. She registered 11 kills, 34 assists and 18 digs for her third straight triple-double (dating back to 2011) and fifth of her career. Manthorpe followed that match with a double-double as she dished out 44 assists and recorded 13 digs in a 3-1 win against James Madison. She averaged 1.62 kills, 9.75 assists and 3.88 digs per set in two matches.
Morey earns BIG EAST Freshman of the Week laurels after solid performances against No. 1 and defending national champion UCLA as well as No. 4 Nebraska. In her first collegiate game against UCLA, the freshman recorded 29 digs to rank among the top Irish in school history. She concluded the weekend with 50 total digs to go along with eight assists.

Tallied 37 kills and hit .308 in a weekend in which she faced No. 1 and defending national champion UCLA and No. 4 Nebraska.
Alex Lassa, Rutgers, Fr., OH
Named to the Hurricane Invitational All-Tournament Team. Tallied a team-best 51 kills and led all players in the tournament with 4.25 kills per set.
Sabina Piegza, St. John’s, Sr., MB/RH
Received All-Tournament Team honors at Battle at the Bay. Had atleast 20 assists in all four matches.
Caitlin Welch, Louisville, Jr., DS
Recorded her 1,000th career dig and had a match-high in digs in all three matches this weekend with 27, 22 and 15.
Lindsey Ziztke, Pittsburgh, So., S
Had 74 assists, 21 digs, 10 kills, five blocks and hit .318 in three games, two of which came against nationally ranked opponents.
