PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The BIG EAST notched four top 10 teams as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its national polls on Monday. Georgetown was ranked third after capturing the 2011 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship. Providence took the number seven spot after placing fifth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships a year ago. Syracuse ranked ninth after winning the NCAA Northeast Regional for the third year in a row last season. Villanova rounded out the group in the tenth spot after finishing third at the 2012 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship.
On the men’s side, No. 12 Syracuse earns a top 20 spot with a first-place regional finish last season. Georgetown ranked 14 after winning the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in 2011. Villanova was the final BIG EAST Cross Country team to make the list for the men. The Wildcats finished 13th at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
BIG EAST cross country teams begin competition this weekend. St. John’s will host the BIG EAST Cross Country Championships. The conference championship will take place on October 26, 2012 beginning at 11 a.m. with the women’s race, followed by the men.
