BIGEAST.tv Spotlight on Jonelle Filigno
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Recently we had a chance to catch up with Rutgers redshirt-junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Ont.) who has helped the Scarlet Knights begin the year 4-0-0, their best start since 2007. She was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 20 and Aug. 27. Filigno was a member of Team Canada, which captured bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Below is an excerpt from our interview.
On The Experience of the Olympics:
It was obviously amazing, to have a medal at the Olympic Games. Never mind medaling, but being a part of the Olympics is something that I’ve obviously dreamed of as a kid. It was an unbelievable experience. I think being able to medal, and being able to inspire so many girls across our country, and hopefully in the U.S. too. It has been able to give us the confidence, give myself the confidence and hopefully bring that back to Rutgers.
FIVE QUICK KICKS
It’s a couple years old, but it will always be The Notebook.
Best athlete in your family?
Everyone in my family has been great athletes, but my dad will claim he is the best so I’ll give it to him.
Which team not on your schedule would you most like to play?
Probably UCLA, just because we lost to them last year 1-0. I would love to have a rematch against them.
Who has had the biggest impact on your soccer career?
I don’t want to single out someone in my family; I think they’ve all made the biggest impact on my soccer career. They are there for me whenever I need them and have been there for me every step of the way.
What is your favorite Olympic sport to watch, besides soccer?
Beach volleyball I like it a lot!
