PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference has named USF wide receiver Andre Davis, Cincinnati defensive end Walter Stewart and Rutgers cornerback Brandon Jones the winners of the conference's weekly football honors following Week 2 of the 2012 season.
Davis was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after he set school records with 12 receptions and 191 receiving yards and delivered two long touchdown catches to help USF to a 32-31, come-from-behind win at Nevada. His 56-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave USF its only lead of the game, capping a comeback from an 11-point deficit with less than three minutes remaining. Davis also had a 51-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Davis’ 191 receiving yards are the third-most by an FBS player in the young season.
Stewart was chosen as BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after he led a Bearcat defense that kept Pittsburgh out of the end zone until 34 seconds remained in regulation, helping Cincinnati to a 34-10 win against the Panthers in the BIG EAST opener for both teams. Stewart had nine tackles to go with 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble that led to a Bearcat touchdown as Cincinnati picked up its fourth straight win, dating to last season.
Jones, who was named BIG EAST Special Teams Player of the Week, came up with his second touchdown of the young season in Rutgers’ 26-0 win against Howard as he scored on a 6-yard blocked punt return in the second quarter to put the Scarlet Knights ahead 13-0. It was Rutgers’ third blocked kick of the 2012 season and it came one week after Jones’ interception return for a touchdown in the season-opening win at Tulane.
