THE GAME
Saturday’s game will be the third meeting between Connecticut and Western Michigan and the first to be played in Kalamazoo … The Broncos were 38-31 winners last year in East Hartford, Conn., behind 479 passing yards and five touchdowns from QB Alex Carder … Connecticut’s win in the series came in the 2003 season, when the Huskies erased a 17-0 deficit on their way to a 41-27 victory at Rentschler Field.

Connecticut bounced back from its first loss of the season with a particularly satisfying 24-21 win at Maryland — and former Huskies head coach Randy Edsall … The Huskies opened the season with a 37-0 win against Massachusetts, followed by a 10-7 loss to North Carolina State … Defense has been the Huskies’ calling card thus far … Connecticut leads the nation in tackles for loss (10.67 per game), is third in sacks (4.67 spg) and total defense (174.0 ypg) and is fifth in both rushing defense (51.0 ypg) and pass defense (123.0 ypg) … DE Trevardo Williams (4.5), LB Yawin Smallwood (4.0) and LB Sio Moore (3.5) are all ranked among the top 12 individuals nationally in sacks … The defense did receive a setback with the season-ending Achilles tendon injury to DE Jesse Joseph against Maryland … Connecticut has scored two touchdowns on punt returns and has one TD on an interception return, but does not have a touchdown pass this season … RB Lyle McCombs has 236 rushing yards and three TDs … QB Chandler Whitmer has completed 40 of 68 passes for 491 yards with five interceptions.

Western Michigan fell to 1-2 after a 28-23 setback at Minnesota last Saturday … The Broncos opened the season with a 24-7 loss at Illinois, and scored a 52-21 victory against Eastern Illinois in Week 2 … The game against Connecticut is the first of three straight home dates for the Broncos … Western Michigan went 7-6 last year, falling to Purdue in the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl … QB Alex Carder — a fifth-year senior and an All-MAC Second Team choice in 2011 — threw for more than 3,800 yards last year and had 31 touchdown passes … Carder is off to a strong start in 2012 with 812 yards and seven TDs on 79-of-127 passing … RB Dareyon Chance is the leading rusher with 209 yards on 41 carries this season … Chance enters Saturday’s game on the heels of a 144-yard day against Minnesota … Freshman WR Jaime Wilson has a team-high 29 receptions — nearly three times as many as any other Western Michigan player — including four touchdown catches … Wilson is averaging 110.0 receiving yards per game … LB Johnnie Simon, a second-team All-MAC selection last year, has a team-high 28 tackles.
