Wednesday Night in the BIG EAST
In the final night of nonconference competition before BIG EAST play starts, UConn defeated in-state foe Fairfield in three sets by the scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-23. Syracuse hosted its home opener against Binghamton and lost 3-2.
The Huskies were led by their senior class of Mattison Quayle, Kelsey Maving and Angela Roidt. Quayle led all Huskies with 10 kills and was a force at net with seven blocks. Maving continues to rack up the dig count, adding 18 more to her league-high 288 and Roidt dished out a match-high 30 assists. UConn improved to 9-6 with the win.
Conference Play Begins
BIG EAST action begins this weekend with 13 matches. The surprise of the season heading into conference play has been the success of Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights were picked to finish last in the BIG EAST preseason poll, but lead all schools with a 14-1 record. They are riding a 12-match win streak entering this weekend and will host USF (8-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The other marquee matchups on Saturday include Pittsburgh (9-5) at Seton Hall (11-1) and Notre Dame (8-5) at Cincinnati (2-10). The Bearcats, picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST preseason poll, have faced seven top-25 teams in just 12 matches including two against top-10 schools. On Sunday, No. 10 Louisville (11-1) hosts Notre Dame (7-5) in a match of preseason favorites. The Cardinals received 12 first-place votes in the preseason poll and Notre Dame was picked to finish third.
