Tuesday Night in the BIG EAST
Last night featured just one nonconference BIG EAST match in which Seton Hall swept St. Peter’s by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-12 en route to its 11th straight win and best start in program history. The Pirates are 14-1 and their 11 straight wins marks the longest winning streak since 1994.
Sophomore Simona Sekulova tallied a match-high 13 kills while senior Olivia Trudeau controlled the offense with 34 assists. Junior Alyssa Warren led the defense with 17 digs and freshman Sara Connell joined her in double-digits with 11.
Individual NCAA Rankings
Seniors Lola Arslanbekova of Louisville and Jordanne Scott of Cincinnati rank eighth and 14th in the nation in kills per set, averaging 4.73 and 4.50 respectively. Senior Rachel Rohlfs of Cincinnati ranks 13th in assists per set with 11.67 while senior Kelsey Maving of UConn and junior Mariah Henley of Villanova rank 10th and 14th respectively in digs per set, averaging 5.67 and 5.54. Also among the nation’s best is sophomore Lindsey Gosh of Marquette who ranks eighth in aces per set with 0.57.
BIG EAST in the Polls
Louisville dropped five spots in the polls after losing to Notre Dame and ranks No. 17 while Marquette and Notre Dame both received votes. It marks the first time this season the Fighting Irish have received votes.
What to Watch
The key match to keep an eye on this week is Marquette at Notre Dame. Fresh off its win over No. 10 Lousiville, the Fighting Irish (9-5, 2-0 BIG EAST) look for another big win against the Golden Eagles (10-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Sept. 29 in Notre Dame, Ind. Both teams are receiving votes in the AVCA Top-25 Poll.
