PROVIDENCE, R.I. – National powers Syracuse and Connecticut square off Saturday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. ET at Coyne Field in Syracuse, N.Y. to determine the 2012 BIG EAST field hockey regular season champion and the top seed at the conference championship, which begins next weekend in Louisville, Ky.
The Orange (16-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) are ranked No. 3, and the Huskies (15-1, 5-0 BIG EAST) No. 4 in the Penn Mondo/National Field Hockey Coaches Association coaches’ poll released on Oct. 23. The teams have competed in the BIG EAST Championship final in each of the last four seasons.
Syracuse’s only loss this season came at No. 18 Massachusetts on Oct. 11. Connecticut’s lone loss came Oct. 21 to No. 2 Princeton.
The Connecticut-Syracuse winner will be the No. 1 seed and will face the No. 4 seed in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship at either 5 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. ET.
Louisville (11-7, 2-3 BIG EAST), fresh off a win against No. 24 Ohio State on Oct. 22, will play at Providence Saturday at noon in a contest that could determine the final spot in the four-team BIG EAST Championship field. If Louisville wins, it will clinch the No. 3 seed and Providence will be the No. 4 seed. If Providence wins, it will be No. 3 and Rutgers will be No. 4.
Villanova will not qualify for the conference tournament due to a goal differential tiebreaker following its 5-3 win vs. Georgetown on Friday.
