PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame’s Ryan Finley was named BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Georgetown’s Tomas Gomez earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time. Teammate Brandon Allen earned his third BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honor and Tim Parker, from St. John’s, was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in 2012.
Finley tallied three goals in two games. He notched a pair of goals in a 3-1 win against Marquette on Oct. 24 that helped the Irish clinch the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship and a bye to the quarterfinals. He also netted the equalizer in the 88th minute in a 1-1 draw at Marquette on Oct. 27.
Gomez posted two shutouts last week, making eight saves as the Hoyas went 2-0 to defeat Seton Hall twice and secure a share of the Blue Division regular-season title. The Hoyas posted a 2-0 win on Oct. 24 and a 1-0 victory on Oct. 27.
Parker anchored a defensive unit that blanked Syracuse 1-0 on Oct. 26. Parker and the defense surrendered just seven shots, four on goal in the in 1-0 win. SU entered the game averaging 2.00 goals per game and had been held without a goal just once all season.
Allen scored two goals in a 2-0 week for the Hoyas. He had the gamewinner against Seton Hall on Oct. 27 in a 1-0 win and scored the insurance goal in a 2-0 victory on Oct. 24.
BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
David Leverentz, DePaul, Sr., MF
Leverentz scored twice in his first start of the season, leading DePaul to its first BIG EAST win of the season – a 3-2 victory against USF.
Brock Granger, Louisville, Sr., D
Granger helped the Cardinals to a 2-0 week, with a 2-1 win against UC Irvine and a 1-0 shutout against Cincinnati. In the game against the Bearcats, Granger scored the gamewinner.
Keasel Broome, Providence, R-So., GK
Broome led the Friars to a 1-1-0 record for the week against No. 3/4 Connecticut, posting a shutout with three saves. In a loss to the Huskies on Saturday, he made four saves.
Kene Eze, Rutgers, Jr., F
Eze scored the last two goals, including the gamewinner in overtime, in a 3-2 win against Villanova.
Rafael Diaz, St. John’s, R-Jr., GK
Diaz made four saves in a 1-0 shutout against Syracuse, all coming in the second half. The clean sheet was the eighth of the season for Diaz, tying a career high. SU had averaged 2.0 goals per game and had been scoreless just once all season.
