Updated BIG EAST Field Hockey Notes and Statistics
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 1 seed Syracuse downed No. 4 seed Providence 3-1 at Trager Stadium Friday to earn a berth in the 2012 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship final. The Orange will appear in the championship final for the fifth straight year.
Syracuse struck first with 15 minutes left in the first half. Laura Hahnefeldt tucked the ball away after a Syracuse penalty corner. The junior gave the Orange a 1-0 lead with the assist credited to sophomore Jordan Page.
The Orange notched their second goal on a breakaway late in the first half. Freshman Gillian Pinder found senior Kelsey Millman in front of the Providence net for the tip-in. Syracuse took a 2-0 lead and an 11-4 shot advantage into halftime.
Providence got a spark from sophomore Henni Tietze to begin the second half. The sophomore knocked in a penalty corner on the stop from junior Caitlin Malone and the insertion from sophomore Kaleigh FitzPatrick.
Gillian Pinder kept the Syracuse offense going on an unassisted shot from the top of the circle in the 25th minute to give the Orange a 3-1 lead.
Providence and Syracuse met in the semifinals for the first time since 2009. The Orange lead the BIG EAST Championship semifinal series against the Friars 5-1 all-time. Syracuse defeated Providence 3-0 in Providence R.I., on Oct. 6.
