LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Connecticut and Syracuse will face off in the 2012 BIG EAST Championship final slated to begin at 1:00 p.m., at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. The teams will meet for the fifth consecutive time in the BIG EAST Championship final.
Connecticut (17-2), the No. 2 seed, went 5-1 in regular season conference play this season. Syracuse dealt Connecticut its only league loss of the season on Oct. 27 by a score of 3-2 at J.S. Coyne Field in Syracuse, N.Y. The Huskies defeated the No. 3 seed Louisville in the semifinals 2-1 in overtime on Nov. 2. Graduate student Louisa Boddy converted on a penalty corner to secure a chance for the Huskies to win their 12th BIG EAST crown. Connecticut has competed in the BIG EAST final every year since 2002. Connecticut is ranked No. 5 in the latest NFHCA Coaches’ Poll.
The Orange (17-1) enter the BIG EAST final with a perfect 6-0 record against league opponents. The BIG EAST regular season champions are in the hunt for their seventh BIG EAST title. Syracuse defeated the No. 4 seed Providence in the semifinals 3-1. Junior Laura Hahnefeldt, senior Kelsey Millman and freshman Gillian Pinder recorded goals for the Orange. Syracuse has made an appearance in the BIG EAST final for each of the last five years. Syracuse is ranked No. 3 in the latest NFHCA Coaches’ Poll.
Sunday’s BIG EAST Championship final marks the eighth time the teams will compete for the league title. The Orange lead the conference final series 4-3. Connecticut and Syracuse first met 20 years ago in the 1992 final, with the Huskies winning 1-0. Connecticut and Syracuse have also played each other in the semifinal round eight times. The Huskies lead the BIG EAST Championship series 11-5 all-time against the Orange.
The winner of the BIG EAST Championship final will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Old Dominion University will host this year’s NCAA competition in Norfolk, Va., on Nov. 16 and 18.
