PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Juniors Greg Andrews and Britney Sanders of Notre Dame were named BIG EAST Player of the Month in men’s tennis and BIG EAST Player of the Month in women’s tennis, respectively, for their performances during the month of October.
Andrews, ranked No. 24 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, competed in three events in October. He went 1-1 at the ITA Men’s All-American Championships by defeating No. 29 Clay Thompson of UCLA in straight sets (6-0, 6-4) before falling to No. 9 Ray Sarmiento of USC. At the Tom Fallon Invitational, Andrews defeated another ranked opponent in No. 51 Alex Petrone of Michigan (6-4, 6-2). The junior completed the month at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in both singles competition and doubles. He went 1-1 in singles and advanced to the final in doubles with partner Spencer Talmadge. The duo compiled an 8-1 record at the event.
Sanders, ranked No. 98 nationally in the ITA singles rankings, compiled a 4-1 singles mark and 4-1 doubles record for October. The junior notched two wins over ranked opponents en route to the final of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Sanders defeated No. 9 Emina Bektas (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) and No. 117 Belinda Niu (6-3, 6-4), both of Michigan, but fell short to No. 12 Kate Turvy of Northwestern in the championship match. She also reached the final in doubles play at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships with partner Julie Sabacinski. The duo, ranked No. 36 in the ITA poll, defeated No. 10 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton of Northwestern (8-6) before losing to Melissa Kopinski and Rachael White of Illinois in the final.
