Wednesday in the BIG EAST
Wednesday featured two BIG EAST matches; Connecticut (18-11, 9-5 BIG EAST) at Georgetown (7-20, 1-13 BIG EAST) and St. John’s (20-10, 7-7 BIG EAST) at Rutgers (18-11, 4-10 BIG EAST). The Huskies took the match in four sets, winning by scores of 19-25, 29-27, 26-24 and 25-19. They were led by sophomore Karson Ratliff’s match-high 17 kills. Senior Mattison Quayle and freshman Erika Thomas joined her in double-digit kills with 14 and 10 respectively. Freshman Marissa Prinzbach dished out 42 assists and totaled 10 digs to complete the double-double.
St. John’s won a crucial match yesterday against Rutgers, defeating the Scarlet Knights in four sets. They won by scores of 25-23, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-22. Freshman Karin Palgutova recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and added 13 digs while senior Sabina Piegza dished out 44 assists. The Red Storm host DePaul (8-18, 3-10 BIG EAST) tomorrow at 7 p.m. If they win, they will clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Championship.
What to Watch
Two days of competition remain in BIG EAST regular season play with just three spots open and five teams in the hunt for a conference tournament berth. Tomorrow, Pittsburgh (15-13, 5-8 BIG EAST) hosts Seton Hall (18-8, 6-7 BIG EAST) at 7 p.m. in a must-win situation for the Panthers. On Sunday, Nov. 11, USF (15-12, 6-7) will travel to Storrs, Conn. to face Connecticut. The two teams met earlier this season on Oct. 19 when the Huskies pulled away a narrow victory, claiming a 3-2 win on the road.
