Hamilton, N.Y. (Nov. 10) – An early goal by sophomore Amy Pietrangelo and a strong defensive effort lifted Rutgers over Colgate 1-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Championship Saturday night at Van Doren Field. The Scarlet Knights (13-7-1) advance to the second round, where they will take on No. 2 seed Virginia.
“We beat a very good team tonight,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “We had a lot of resolve tonight - on the road, in a tough environment. The goal was great and came at a time in the match where we were controlling the game very well. There were moments after that where the game was escaping us, but that is part of our unity.”
RU rises to 5-0-1 all-time in NCAA first round matches under head coach Glenn Crooks, advancing all six times.
“That was a collective team effort,” said senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.). “We were so strong. Everyone was working to get behind the ball and when you have good defensive shape, that leads to good attacking.”
The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the 17th minute, as sophomore forward Cassie Inacio corralled a loose ball, flicking it to Pietrangelo. From 24 yards out, the Laval, Quebec native blasted a strike into the top right corner of the net.
