NCAA Championship Bracket
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three BIG EAST volleyball teams will participate in the 2012 NCAA Championship as announced by the NCAA selection committee on Sunday. Louisville, the recipient of the conference’s automatic bid after winning the BIG EAST Championship crown, earned the No. 10 seed in the 64-team field and will host Belmont on Nov. 29. The Cardinals will participate in the Berkeley, Calif. Regional. Marquette received an at-large bid and will face Creighton on Nov. 30 in Minneapolis, Minn. Notre Dame also received an at-large bid and will face Ohio State on Nov. 30 in Lexington, Ky. Marquette and Notre Dame are both in the West Lafayette, Ind. Regional.
The BIG EAST is sending three schools to the NCAA Championship for the second year in a row. The three selections tie a conference record, which also occurred in 2006, 2009 and 2011.
Louisville (29-3, 14-1 BIG EAST) captured its fifth BIG EAST Championship title on Nov. 18 with a 3-0 sweep over Marquette to earn the league’s automatic berth. The Cardinals received the No. 10 seed and will host first and second round action on Nov. 29 and 30. They will face Belmont (18-16) from the Ohio Valley Conference. If the Cardinals advance, they will take on the winner of Tennessee and Michigan on Nov. 30. The Cardinals make their 15th consecutive appearance and have qualified for the Championship every year since joining the BIG EAST in 2005. Louisville was ranked No. 9 in the most recent AVCA Division I Coaches Poll.
Marquette (27-6, 13-2 BIG EAST) will play in its second consecutive NCAA Championship. The Golden Eagles will face Creighton (28-3) of the Missouri Valley Conference on Nov. 30 in Minneapolis, Minn. If Marquette advances they will take on the winner of Liberty and host Minnesota on Dec. 1. The Golden Eagles were receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Division I Coaches Poll.
Notre Dame (20-9, 13-2 BIG EAST) has qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2009. The Fighting Irish will travel to Lexington, Ky., where they will face Ohio State (22-10) from the Big Ten Conference on Nov. 30. If the Fighting Irish advance, they will take on the winner of East Tennessee State and host Kentucky on Dec. 1.
First-and second-round matchups will be played between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1. Teams winning both matches will move on to regional play Dec. 7 and 8. The pre-determined regional sites are Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif., CenturyLink Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb., Gregory Gymnasium in Austin, Texas, and Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. The regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by Louisville at the KFC YUM! Center on Dec. 13 and 15.
