Notre Dame and Rutgers Earn Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Bill Bass of Notre Dame was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week in men’s swimming and diving and freshman Joanna Wu of Rutgers earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors in women’s swimming and diving in the eighth weekly awards of the 2012-13 season.

 

Bass helped lead No. 20 Notre Dame to a 131-112 win over Cleveland State. The senior claimed two first-place finishes in individual races and was a member of the 200 medley relay team that took first overall. Bass swam the 100-yard butterfly in 50.58 seconds and finished the 200 individual medley in 1:50.59. He also swam the fly leg of the 200 medley relay in 22.13 seconds to help the team take first place with a mark of 1:32.44 as the Fighting Irish improved to 6-0 in dual meets.

 

Wu won three individual events as Rutgers defeated Richmond 164-135 and Central Connecticut State 219-80. She won the 100 backstroke in 55.61 seconds, the 200 backstroke in 2:01.25 and the 500 freestyle in 5:00.77. Her time in the 100 backstroke was a personal best. She also swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay team in 26.10 seconds as the squad won with a mark of 1:45.30.

 

The 2012-13 Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors will be awarded throughout the season when at least half of the teams are participating. The next weekly awards will be announced on Jan. 29.

  • Louisville and Notre Dame are ranked No. 17 and No. 19 respectively in the Jan. 16 women’s CSCAA coaches’ poll. The Cardinals and Fighting Irish are ranked No. 16 and No. 20 nationally in the men’s Dec. 4 CSCAA coaches’ poll.
  • Junior Joao De Lucca of Louisville has the fastest time in the nation in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:32.57. He has the second fastest mark in the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.05 and the seventh fastest time in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 19.61.
  • Sophomore Caryle Blondell of Louisville has the eighth fastest mark in the country in the 100 freestyle at 43.16 seconds.
  • Sophomore Emma Reaney of Notre Dame has the fourth fastest NCAA time in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:07.60, the fourth fastest time in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 1:55.05 and the seventh fastest time in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 59.38.
  • Sophomore Addison Bray of Louisville has the 10th best mark in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:55.82.
